Meteora is an impressive region in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka. It is known for its monasteries built on rocks, creating a unique and stunning landscape. The term ‘Meteora’ means ‘above the sky’ or ‘in the air,’ derived from the Greek word ‘meteoros,’ meaning ‘high’ or ‘airy.’ It is an apt description for the monasteries perched on the top of the rock formations.
Meteora is one of the most important religious destinations in Greece. The first inhabitants of the region settled there in the 11th century, while most of the monasteries were built between the 14th and 16th centuries. Today, six monasteries are still operating and open to visitors. They contain precious religious artifacts, intricate frescoes, and libraries with ancient manuscripts.
Aside from its religious significance, Meteora is also a popular tourist destination. Visitors can take a guided tour of the monasteries, hike through the surrounding trails, or simply admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.
